So what are your "New Year's resolutions"? They always seem to pop
up about now. During these first few weeks of January, we often hear—or
find ourselves saying—things like "This year, I'm going to go to the
gym every day!" or "I'm going to learn a new language this year" or "I'm
going to conquer my fear of spiders." After all, with a new year comes a
new lifestyle, right?
Most people don't think of resolutions as long lasting. They are just
something you make a big deal about around the New Year but most likely
will forget about by February. Although New Year's resolutions are
presented as a joke, they don't have to be. They can very well be
serious. It's all about commitment.
Think about it like this. A year is over. We have filled it with
either good or bad decisions, and now we have a new, perfectly clean
year in front of us. We have a choice: we can either use our time in it
for good, or we can waste it. You are going to get this opportunity only
once. The past is over and gone—the time we have before us is all that
we have. Will you resolve now to change the direction that your life is
going in and bring it more toward Christ? Are you willing to hold to
your commitment? You don't need to make a New Year's resolution; you
just have to make a choice to dedicate your life to God and stick to it.
It's simple, yet it's hard. But it will be worth it in the end. So step
out!
I have a class for school called Speech. This is supposed to help me learn how to stand properly while speaking, pronounce words properly, and so on. The most recent section is on how to give meaning and feeling to a poem when reading one out loud. My teacher, Mrs. Autrey, has been reciting poems to us as examples, and she uses a variety such as happy poems, sad poems, thoughtful and so on. One of them that caught my attention was a funny remake of the famous poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost. The original is one of my favorite poems, and I have always loved the other poetic works of Robert Frost. Here is the original poem: Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening By Robert Frost Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer
